My other car was a ________________
“I inherited my parents blue station wagon, which was way too big for my small frame. The seats didn’t adjust, so I had to place a pillow under me so I could see over the steering wheel and another pillow behind me so I could reach the pedals. I was too embarrassed to use the school parking lot. Instead, I’d park on a street corner and walk three blocks to school. I would have happily traded the station wagon for any smaller car.”

Nerd? Geek? Jock? Snob?
I was on the school newspaper and in the drama club. Peer pressure rarely touched me, so I was known as the friendly girl who flitted between clubs and cliques. I’m remembered best for petite size (don’t get me started on nicknames!), my roles in the school plays, and for a Yearbook photo taken of me on the set for Of Mice and Men.

If I could do it all again, I would …
“If I could do it all again, I would insist my parents hire a math tutor.
In elementary school, I was absent a lot due to illnesses. As a result, I missed out on strategic math fundamentals and never caught up or improved. It was a nightmare. I developed math anxiety. In retrospect, my parents REALLY should have hired a tutor to help me.”

There is no better class than _____________
“There is no better class than English (Language Arts).
I won a national essay contest in sixth grade English. That sealed it as my favorite class. My lifelong love of reading and writing began in English class. I love talking to Language Arts’ students about my writer’s journey.”

Now, before we get to the last question, let’s look at Ariella’s book …

Spell FireNew school. New friends. New reputation. High school sophomore Ainslie Avalon-Bennett works hard to hide her Crazy Girl past. But as long as her best friend’s disappearance remains unsolved, she can’t shake the depression and obsessive-compulsive disorder that once landed her in a mental ward.

Ainslie’s tenuous control over her life shatters when her warring parents ditch her at Christmas. While they take a cruise to “work things out,” Ainslie must spend the holiday in Palm Springs with her aunt and uncle, owners of a struggling Mystery School and occult store. Plunged into the world of fire fortunes, dragons, entity eaters, and an ailing spell book, Ainslie is well beyond her comfort zone. Then she meets a boy who spikes her pulse and calms her OCD. But will she lose him once he discovers her past? Or will his deadly secret, hidden in plain view, be their undoing?

Favorite one-line review about the book

I am going to get book 1 & 2 soon, so I can read them, but I really can’t wait to read book 4 when it comes out 🙂

Favorite 6 sentences from the book

“The brimstone stink evaporated, replaced by the calming scent of lavender and sage.
Hazel’s gaze swiveled from me to Thor, then back to me. Looking buffeted by an unseen wind, she silently returned to her seat.
The corners of Thor’s full lips curved upward. Two urges warred within me — the desire to leap across the room and kiss him, and the urge to arch my neck and breathe fire.
Thor’s smile widened.”

But before you go, one last question …

Go ____________!
“Go Cougars!
I went to two high schools. The first school’s colors were red and black and our mascot was a cougar. As we would enter the school parking lot, we passed the bronze crouching cougar that lurked at the top of a tall concrete pedestal. The night before each home football game, members of the rival team would sneak on campus and splash paint in their school colors over our mascot. Sometimes the paint would be red and white, the colors of my second high school.”

Congratulations, Ariella! Good luck with Spell Fire!
